The thunder, lightning and hail storm we had on Tuesday night was dramatic. It was my first actual night in bed since finishing night shift Tuesday morning. I was very grateful I wasn't working. The hail was pelting on my bedroom window. The wee cats weren't too perturbed but every now and then when the thunder became too loud, they'd react . I pushed them back under the duvet so that they couldn't hear it as loudly.

I hate to tell you this, but there is still more lined up to come over from our West Island, Ali

Warmer, wetter winter ahead

12:36PM - Thursday, 02 June 2016

NIWA says we can expect above average temperatures this winter.
 — Video: NIWA/YouTube.

IT MAY BE feeling like winter has arrived, but temperatures are likely to be above average this season.

Before you start celebrating — rainfall is likely to be above average, too. And severe storms.

NIWA's seasonal climate outlook for conditions this winter shows most of the country is likely to experience above average temperatures from June to August.

While there will still be cold snaps and frosts, there will likely be more warmer days.

NIWA's report shows there's an 80 percent chance air temperatures will be above average across the North Island during winter months. — Picture: NIWA.

The North Island in particular can expect above average temperatures, with an “80 percent chance”.

“That's unheard of in the world of climate outlooks and forecasting,” NIWA forecaster Chris Brandolino said.

Why so warm?

Waters surrounding the country “remain exceptionally warm”, with ocean models predicting this will persist through to August.

There is a 70 percent chance air temperatures will be above average in parts of the South Island during the winter months. — Picture: NIWA.

Given the higher moisture source from the warmer source waters, combined with more troughs and low pressure systems that typically enter the Tasman Sea in the winter season, it's possible the country will also experience more active weather than normal.

This means the country is likely to experience more severe storms.

NIWA's climate scientists take into account observations of atmospheric and ocean conditions and output from global and local climate models.

The seasonal climate outlooks are an output of a scientific research programme, supplemented by NIWA's Capability Funding.

It's a beautiful day in Wellington, although just slightly chilly.

It was freezing when I came out of the opera last night though.

Currently at Wellington Airport waiting for boarding time....off to Christchurch for the weekend.

Back home again on Tuesday afternoon.

A stunning day in Christchurch, although now that the sun has long gone, it is bloody freezing.

But the traffic....grrrrrr....this place is getting as bad (perhaps worse) as Auckland!!

On the way in from the airport (heading for a motel in Beazley Avenue), I turned from Fendalton Road into Harper Avenue and straight into a humungous traffic-jam. It took fifteen bloody minutes just to drive along Harper Avenue to Bealey Avenue. Even Auckland isn't that clogged up.

The Handbrake left ChCh airport at 1600 yesterday heading for the Lewis.
Says the traffic along the pike was diabolical.  Stopped in Springs for ten minutes to escape a convoy of about 20 -30 vehicles that had been concertinaing for the past 30 miles

Front brings chance of heavy rain, severe winds

A front is bringing wind and rain to the north but don't worry,
it's going to be fine for the rugby on Saturday.

IT'S going to be dry when the All Blacks take on Wales on Saturday, in the meantime a front will bring wind and rain to parts of the country.

MetService said the forecast was looking favourable for Auckland on Saturday evening, good news for rugby fans.

However, a front is moving across the country, bringing the chance of heavy rain and severe winds to some parts of the country at the end of the working week.

MetService meteorologist Tom Adams said Northland and the West Coast of the South Island would be hit with the worst weather on Thursday.

Auckland was also in for some scattered rain, which would worsen later in the day, along with strong winds, Adams said.

A heavy rain warning had been issued for the headwaters of the Canterbury lakes and Otago lakes and rivers, as well as West Coast and Fiordland.

Meanwhile, a watch was out for heavy rain in Buller and north-west Nelson for Thursday afternoon and evening.

Adams said MetService had also issued a high wind watch for Northland, with the chance of severe winds until the afternoon.

Shortly before 7am on Thursday, Cape Reinga was recording gusts up to 118 kilometres an hour, with 68km/h winds in Kaitaia.

While there had been a small amount of rain in eastern parts of the country, the front was mainly affecting the west coast.

Wellington was in for some afternoon cloud on Thursday and some rain later in the day, along with northerly winds and a high of 17 degrees Celsius.

Down south, Christchurch had some high cloud moving over them on Thursday, with temperatures increasing and an expected high of 14°C, moving up to 19°C on Friday.

Adams said overnight temperatures were warmer on Wednesday, with that trend continuing thanks to the cloud cover and warm air coming down from the north.

The coldest place in the country on Wednesday night was Timaru at minus 2.6°C.

Dunedin Airport got down to minus 1.9°C and Christchurch dropped to 0.6°C.

Meanwhile, the coldest place in the North Island was Raetahi in the Central North Island, on minus 0.3°C.

Mountain snow melts thanks to warm
winter morning and a splash of rain

11:45AM - Thursday, 09 June 2015

Snow — or lack thereof — under the chairlifts at Mount Hutt.
Snow — or lack thereof — under the chairlifts at Mount Hutt.

CANTABRIANS woke to a balmy winter morning with a deep red sunrise and a vertical rainbow over Mount Hutt skifield.

The skifield has had to delay its planned Friday opening after forecasts of severe gales. It hopes to open on Saturday with bumper crowds after a huge interest in its heavily discounted season passes.

MetService duty meteorologist Stephen Glassey said the temperature at Mount Hutt was hovering at 2 to 3 degrees Celsius on Thursday morning.

On Wednesday, temperatures at the mountain reached 6°C.

“That probably is causing some of the snow to melt … there won't be snow today.”

Glassey said a cold southerly front would move up through the South Island on Sunday, and bring fresh snow to all skifields.

A few spots of rain hit Christchurch on Thursday, but the West Coast was in for a heavy dumping of rain.

The Metservice forecast a high of 14 degrees Celsius in Christchurch.

It issued a severe weather warning for the ranges in Westland, south of Otira and Fiordland, where up to 15mm to 20mm of rain per hour was expected on Thursday morning.

Hokitika, Greymouth and Reefton were all forecast to have rain, which would become heavy at times.

A northerly wind and a maximum high of about 16°C was expected.

from The Dominion Post....

Look north at 10.34am tomorrow — that
is when summer slowly heads back

Long nights and short days — it must be winter.

By TOM HUNT | 10:24AM - Monday, 20 June 2016

LOOK NORTH at 10.34am on Tuesday and in the distant horizon you will be able to glimpse summer returning.

That is the exact moment of winter solstice, when the sun will be at its northern-most point and as it starts ever-so-slowly heading back south.

Monday night through to Tuesday morning will be the year's longest night, with Tuesday being our shortest day, MetService meteorologist Claire Flynn said.

For Wellington, that meant the sun would set at 5.01pm on Monday night, then not rise again for 14 hours and 44 minutes, at 7.45am on Tuesday.

For those further south, the shortest day would be shorter and the longest night longer, while those north of Wellington would have the reversed effect.

For Auckland, sunset is at 5.12pm on Monday and sunrise is at 7.34pm Tuesday. (A night lasting 14 hours and 22 minutes).

Christchurch's night goes from 5.01pm Monday to 8.02am Tuesday (15 hours and 1 minute).

Dunedin will have night from 5pm to 8.21am (15 hours and 21 minutes).

Invercargill's night will go from 5.06pm Monday to 8.31am Tuesday (15 hours and 25 minutes).

Despite being, by one measure at least, the mid-point of winter, the country was in for decidedly un-wintry weather on our shortest day.

The upper North Island would have some sun, as well as rain or drizzle, while the lower North Island would be mainly fine.

The South Island's West Coast would have rain or drizzle worsening in the evening while the eastern side of the island would be mostly fine.

It was rather chilly in Masterton this morning (minus 1 degree Celcius) with a “mean” frost.

However, it has turned out to be a beautiful day, as seen in this photograph taken from the hills to the east of Carterton....

? New lens there tj ?

Our winter snuck up behind us yesterday and hit us with overnight fog and a -4c frost that closed the airport with its icy runways;

Today we've had a -5.6 black frost: with the current temp about 7.5c and the forecast of rain due around 3pm I anticipate extratricky driving conditions this afternoon.

It's sort of chilly around the ears

Nope, a Canon EF-S 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 IS lens which I've owned for several years, attached to a Canon EOS 650D crop-frame body.

I also took a couple of shots about 45 minutes after sunrise looking up Queen Street (the main downtown shopping street) towards the roundabout at the northern entrance to Masterton (about a kilometre away) using a Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 lens attached to a Canon EOS 6D full-frame body, with the lens pushed right out to 400mm, but I stuffed up the exposure settings and it didn't work out as intended. It was a pity, as the roundabout was covered in thick frost and even though it was a kilometre away, I could clearly see the sun glinting off the frost through the viewfinder. With the mist from melting frost right down the street, it would have been an amazing photograph, but you don't aways win them all, eh? If its frosty again tomorrow, I might have another go (provided I can be bothered getting out of bed early enough).
