Time to hibernate Nitz . It's a grey miserable day here. it hosed down all day yesterday, and the forecast is looking pretty gloomy for the whole week.
I do prefer winter to summer tho'. Closing up all the curtains, lighting the fire and just kicking back and relaxing.

Our harbour opens directly to the west - and thats where the gale is blowing from and we are in a direct line - it started hard about 15 minutes ago.  Even the dogs are looking out the ranch sliders with fear.

Ive been out and checked all the glass on the deck - all is safe  Roll Eyes

Going to be a chilly one here tonight.   Hate it when we have a frost and then a sea fog rolls in like this morning.

Hail storm in Wellington

Updated at 8:36am on 6 May 2009

A sudden hailstorm made driving conditions treacherous in Wellington on Wednesday morning.

Police say there were drifts hail of up to 5cm on streets in southern parts of the city. Patrol cars lost traction in the suburbs of Newtown and Kilbirnie.

MetService says it's recorded 190 lightning flashes over central New Zealand since 5am, particularly over Wellington.

Huge storm bringing severe gales and big seas

It looks impressive on the future weather maps [http://www.wxmaps.org/pix/aus.slp.html]and it may well engulf the entire country for several days - a low pressure system (that will affect an area the size of Australia) looks set to develop and then anchor itself off the South Island's east coast starting this Friday.

Rain on and off at my place, but there hasn't been too much of it. It's a wee bit chilly, but not cold.

I hear the weather has been a bit rough in Welly this morning!

Weather warning for Wellington

Batton down the hatches

The Dominion Post | Wednesday, 06 May 2009

Houghton Bay, Wellington's south coast, 6.09am. — ADAM BRADLEY.

Houghton Bay, Wellington's south coast, 6.09am. — ADAM BRADLEY.

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for the lower North Island — with hail stones up to 2cm possible — as Wellington was this morning woken by lightning and hail.

Metservice Forecaster Heath Gullery said scattered thunderstorms — some of which could be severe — were expected to hit Wanganui, Manawatu, Tararua, Kapiti–Horowhenua and Wairarapa this morning.

Hail stones up to 2cm were possible, Mr Gullery said.

"Large hail can cause significant damage to crops, orchards, vines, glasshouses and vehicles, as well as make driving conditions hazardous," he said.

Police warned Wellington drivers to be extra cautious on the roads this morning.

Inspector Ken Climo of central police communications said heavy hail had caused difficulty for patrol cars attending a car accident in the suburb of Newtown, with the car's tyres unable to get a good grip on the road.

"Take great care this morning, it doesn't sound like it's going to be a very nice day for driving in to work at all."

A central fire communications spokesman said they had had several call-outs because of the heavy rain and lightning.

"We've been called to a few episodes of minor flooding in the southern suburbs of Wellington this morning and the lightning did cause a few alarms to activate," he said.

MetService forecaster Allister Gorman said lightning storms had arrived in the capital early this morning after tracking northwards up the South Island overnight.

"In the last 24 hours there have been around 800 lightning flashes, but that's been pretty spread out around the country. Everyone has been getting a little dose of something."

Mr Gorman said most of the lightning activity experienced in the Wellington region had now moved on to Wairarapa.

"Wellington can now expect fairly garden variety winter conditions, cold and not very pleasant."

Wellington had also been doused with a heavy isolated downpour this morning, with over 12mm of rain falling over the city's airport in a 20 minute period. Other suburbs in the city experienced less than 1mm of rain.

"We've also had reports of hail falling and blocking drains; people have said the hail was up to 5cm deep in some eastern suburbs."

Those looking forward to some relief at the weekend could be disappointed.

"A large low is moving across the country by the weekend and it is going to be a fairly unsettled and cold weekend for many."

Chilly but clear in Christchurch.  Which should give time for all the soggy bits to dry out before the deluge on the weekend.  They are threatening snow on the East Coast - hopefully it stays in the hills.
