A bit of a grey day this morning in both Wairarapa and Wellington.

I guess I'll find out what the weather is like in Auckland when I get there about 1:00pm.

Nasty bite of winter hits

Hail, snow and rain predicted for capital

GOOD TIMES: Then five-year-old Ari Maling enjoys
2011 snowfall in Brooklyn, Wellington.
 — MAARTEN HOLL/Fairfax NZ.

AFTER A rainy start to the week a "nasty bite of winter" is set to hit Wellington later this week as temperatures plunge and the Rimutaka hill braces for hail and snow.

"It'll get pretty ugly at the end of the week, it'll certainly look like winter on the outside of the tin," MetService forecaster Dan Corbett said.

WeatherWatch head analyst Philip Duncan has warned snow could fall in Wellington city to sea level and could affect air and road traffic around the lower North Island.

Showers would continue tomorrow across Wellington and Kapiti, however a dry northwesterly would keep most of the region relatively warm and dry with temperatures ranging in the mid-teens.

But by Wednesday the "bitterly cold Antarctic air" sweeping the country would really start to bite with occasional showers and northerlies dying out, replaced with rain and strong "biting cold" southerlies in the afternoon and a drop in temperature to about 8 degrees Celsius.

Those southerlies would strengthen overnight and by Thursday morning heavy bursts of rain were on the cards buoyed by strong to gale southerlies that would start to "rip roar," Mr Corbett said.

"It'll just be a real wild Wellington day when you're standing sideways with the wind kicking you past."

By Friday the mercury could plummet to 4°C with the possibility of snow down to 200m on the Rimutaka Hill Road, with soft hail also a potential motoring hazard.

"It's going to be a damn cold end to the week whatever way you slice it," Mr Corbett said.

The polar blast potential to bring significant snow to the south and east of the South Island, as well as central and southern parts of the North Island. Mr Corbett said the biggest dumps seemed likely about inland Canterbury and Marlborough, while snow may fall to near sea level from Southland to Kaikoura by Thursday.

However, by Saturday the wet, cold snap was forecast to break around the Wellington region with temperatures recovering by Saturday.

However, overnight frost could be a problem in the Hutt Valley and Wairarapa on Saturday.

Taieri on flood watch for at least 12 hours

Newstalk ZB staff, Newstalk ZB

June 17, 2013, 3:29 pm

The Otago Regional Council is keeping a close eye on the Taieri River.

The river has already burst its banks in a number of places, including near Dunedin Airport, where the river has overwhelmed a number of paddocks and left some roads impassable.

Water resource scientist at the Otago Regional Council, Matt Dale, says river has not yet reached its peak.

"With small flows coming down from the upper catchment, we're expecting flows to get a bit higher.

"There's also another rain band coming through later this afternoon."
The Taieri is expected to remain at flood levels for at least the next 12 hours.

That Taieri River looks nasty on the TV news.

Hope all is well at the river mouth, Nitzy.

It doesn't get bad here.
The narrow gorge from the mouth to Highway 1 restricts the flow and the Taieri Plain gets the ponding. It's the swamp across the road that makes things difficult for the camp here - it drains a big area and these high tides and SE winds block the outlet with the resulting inundation of the lower lawns... great for the waterfowl    Roll Eyes Wink

It was rather chilly & wet when I started work at 4:00am this morning, and it was crappy in Wellington as well.

However, by the time I got back to Wairarapa mid-morning, it was a fine day, right from the moment I emerged from the Rimutaka Tunnel.

The sun has been shining ever since....must be the calm before the storm.

I guess the crap will hit the fan here later tonight or tomorrow.

I thought the media frenzy during the past few days over the possibility of a bit of inclement weather and a bit of snow was a bit strange.  So far theres been nothing unusual, as far as I can see.  Last year, we had 8 inches of snow on the ground round here by the 18 June.  Nothing so far this year.

What a day.

I'm at work at the moment. The first two trains from Masterton to Wellington have been cancelled, but I'm going to run the third service as far as Petone, then park the train up on the Melling line.

Between Petone and Ngauranga, the railway line has been wiped out by the storm. Most of the signals are gone, overhead is down in several places, the rails are apparently still in place, although virtually all the ballast has been washed away, including all over the adjacent SH2. They are saying it could be several days before the railway line is open right through to Wellington.

And it sounds like Wellington has really copped it overnight.

Wellington and the Hutt have copped it alright. Most schools in the Hutt are closed. It's cold, wet and wild. I have power however there are those I know who don't. I have no radio or television signal but at least I have the heater!

Road Contractors were pulled earlier for safety reasons so any trees done and flooding will be ignored at this stage.

Friends and I were meant to go to Palmerston North today for lunch with a friend who lives there but we canned that at 6.45am this morning.

ROAD CLOSURES

WELLINGTON REGION

Cottle Park Rd

Owen Rd

Maungaraki Rd

Port Rd

Marine Dr

Eastern Hutt Rd between Stokes Valley and Silverstream - only under the bridge

The main Wainuiomata Hill Rd is still open, but the on and off ramps from Seaview are closed.

Paekakariki Hill Rd

Both roads to Makara Village and Makara Beach

Middleton Rd, between Johnsonville and Churton Park.

RAIL, BUS LINE CLOSURES

The rail line between Petone and Wellington is closed - so train services between the Hutt Valley and Wellington have been cancelled until further notice.

The line between Waikanae and Paekakariki is also closed, with signal problems likely to cause delays between Porirua and Wellington.

All school bus routes have been cancelled this morning, a NZ Bus spokeswoman said.

Buses were also not travelling into Eastbourne or Wellington's south coast.

Wellington's trolley bus network was also hit by power cuts, with serious delays expected.

FLIGHTS CANCELLED

Air New Zealand says all flights in or out of Wellington before 8am are cancelled and check-in is suspended till at least 10am. Delays were likely for flights in or out of Auckland and Christchurch.

FERRIES

Interisland ferries cancelled for the day.

We didn't seem to get winds as strong as forcast - good sound and light show however. Fair amount of hail too.

Wind warnings have now been lifted for Auckland and Northland.

It is quite windy and cold but at least the sun is shining here. I feel sorry for all those without power and fortunate that we still have it.

It's still raining and it's still cold. There are places much worse off than Wellington and the Hutt but it's still raining and it's still cold.

I don't have TV signal again this morning. I quite like it on in the background for company - but not today!
