The forecast was for cloudy in Wellington - not sure what it's like yet on the other side of the Harbour, but in Upper Hutt it is SPLENDID - loads of sunshine and I have had the doors and windows open here since 7.30am. It's stunning so far

I am sorta scared to mention what it's like here, in case it changes from the current perfection of four days worth of our "Indian Summer".

Our Indian summer has screeched to a halt!

With occasional drizzle from ESE, it feels like 2c here but weather station says it's 10c.

So dark that my Chookies went to bed at 2:30pm. Baro 1003 and dropping.

Nemmind, winter solstice is only a calendar month away.

Probably caused by reflections from the building across the road (the building I took the photograph from).

As the sun has moved around, those reflections have also moved and are now on the Panama Street frontage of the building on the corner of Waterloo Quay and Panama Street.

The building I am in has heavily tinted windows with a copper-coloured tinge, so I guess that is reflecting sunlight onto other buildings.

Anyway, gotta go out....things to do, people to see.

yeah, thought that was the reason, had wondered if there was a sign on the building behind ya with light coming through the spaces between some solid words, showing up the Harbour Board building.

It's bloody freezing in Masterton today.

You can feel that it is snowing on the hills around here.

And one of the drivers on the early trains to Wellington this morning texted me to say the Mangaroa Valley (where the railway line emerges from the Rimutaka Tunnel on the Wellington side) near Upper Hutt is covered in snow. The first real wintery blast of the year has hit, even though it isn't winter until next Saturday.

It's wet and a little chilly in Upper Hutt. I'm on night shift so electric blanket is on and once the chill is off the bed I am off to hopefully get some sleep.

Plenty of hail up this way and some of it is large pea sized rather than the usual PET pellet size.

Hill road reopened, more snow on the way

Snow to hamper communters

SNOW will continue to hamper commuters travelling between Wellington and Wairarapa, with the Rimutaka Hill Road open only intermittently.

The road was closed this morning due to snow and deteriorating conditions, but has been opened several times during the day to allow motorists through, when the weather has allowed.

NZ Transport Agency operations manager Mark Owen said another snowfall was predicted for 4pm, and there was likely to be delays to journeys all afternoon and evening.

"When it's safe we will open the road but be aware that we will close it again at short notice if the weather or conditions on the road worsen and we think it's unsafe for motorists," said Mr Owen.

At one stage today, more than a dozen vehicles were stranded at the top of the hill. The road was opened briefly to allow them to pass at 10.20am, but closed soon after.

Snow and sleet continue to fall at the summit, with about 10 to 15cm having built up.

Driver Stuart Wright lost control of his car on the hill, his Ford Mondeo slipping a short way off the road and taking minor damage.

Carterton transport company owner and driver Tony Olszewski said this morning he had two trucks at the bottom of the hill, on the Hutt Valley side, filled with vegetables and fruit for Wairarapa supermarkets.

The road re-opening meant he could continue on his route and would not have to travel via the Pahiatua Track, which would have meant a long detour via Palmerston North.

Featherston locals Jason Brixton, 24, and Elena Lynch, 20, were on their way over the hill to help a family member paint his house in Petone, but changed their minds when they reached the summit.

After throwing a few snowballs, they opted to head back down the hill to the Wairarapa, rather then risk being stuck in Petone if the snow settled in.

The snow is expected to spread, with Metservice saying Wellington’s hill suburbs could be in for snow this evening.

Snow was expected in Karori, Northland, and Johnsonville tonight.

Just before 11am, MetService issued watches and warnings for heavy snow in the far south of the South Island, the central North Island high country and high ground in Wellington and Wairarapa.

"The snow could cause major disruption to transport and motorists are advised to proceed with caution. Frosts overnight could also make driving conditions hazardous, even in areas not directly affected by snow."

Hailstorms were also reported in central Wellington today.

MetService forecaster Elke Louw said snow was this morning falling on the Rimutaka Hill road. While it was unclear how much had settled, the road would be affected.

MetService meteorologist Dan Corbett said the temperature at the top of the Rimutaka Hill was 1°C at 9.15am.

Snow was expected to fall in flurries through the morning, with more arriving later today and tonight, when 10-20 cm was forecast. Not all would settle.

Kelburn was 5°C at 9.15am, while Wellington Airport was 7°C and Lower Hutt was 4°C.

"Soft hai", which could be mistaken for snow, could fall to sea level in Wellington today.

The southerly was blowing at 50km/h at Wellington Airport this morning, but would be gusting to about 110km/h later today.

Mr Corbett also had some good news: "By Thursday and Friday we are back into the middle teens and sunshine."

Outside Wellington, snow had settled to about 0.5cm deep on the Desert Road.

The Ruapehu ski fields would have also got snow, Ms Louw said.

Meanwhile, a thunderstorm moved through Wairarapa about 6pm yesterday with flashes of lightning visible in Wellington.

A dusting of snow could be visible on the Tararua Ranges today.

A severe weather watch was in place for areas around Taranaki and Whanganui, where squally thunderstorms were likely.

Some thunder and hail could be coming to Wairarapa this afternoon and Hawke’s Bay could get snow to 500m above sea level, with showers towards the coast.

Some of yesterday's hail.
I know it is not as impressive as you get south of Auckland (but this did hang around a while when it didn't get rained on) and this is not a good shot but hey, I finally managed to get of photo from my phone to the computer.
