At least 7 wounded in city shootings

By LIAM FORD and PETER NICKEAS | 9:50PM CDT - Wednesday, May 15, 2013

A MAN was shot and critically wounded inside a building in the Beverly neighborhood this afternoon, one of at least seven people shot in the city this afternoon and evening, police said.

The man, believed to  be in his 30s, was shot in a building in the 9900 block of South Walden Parkway about 12:30 p.m., said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Joshua Purkiss.

The man's attacker fled the scene, Purkiss said. The victim was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition, with multiple gunshot wounds, Purkiss said.

A description of the attacker was not available.

Later this afternoon, a 30-year-old man was shot near 24th Street and Homan Avenue at 1:57 p.m., said News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines. The man was shot in both legs and was hospitalized in good condition at Mount Sinai Hospital.

About 4:15 p.m., a 19-year-old man was shot in the hip in the 3000 block of South Lawndale Avenue, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Daniel O'Brien. He left the scene before police were alerted, and walked into Mount Sinai Hospital for treatment.

Just before 6:50 p.m., a man was shot in the side in the 7000 block of South Clyde Avenue, O'Brien said. His condition had stabilized at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

About 7:20 p.m., a 30-year-old man was shot in the back in the 8300 block of South Wood Street, O'Brien said. The man's condition was stabilized at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, he said.

About an hour after the South Wood Street shooting, two men were shot in the 6400 block of South Stony Island Avenue in the Woodlawn neighborhood. One man was shot in the mouth and the other twice in the left arm, police said.

A 30-year-old man was fatally shot at about 8 p.m. on the 6000 block of South Talman in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood, officials said.

The man, described as a white hispanic male, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a spokesman with the Cook County medical examiner's office.

About an hour later, at 6:09 p.m., a 21-year-old man was also critically injured in a shooting, said Hernandez.

That shooting happened on the 5000 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue in the Bronzeville neighborhood, said Hernandez. The victim was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for treatment.

At 6:33 p.m., a 24-year-old man was shot on the 800 block of North Lavergne in the South Austin neighborhood, Hernandez said. The man was shot in the neck and was taken in serious-to-critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, officials said.

AT LEAST seven people have been wounded in shootings in Chicago this evening, including two people shot to death and a boy about 6 years old shot in the shoulder, authorities said.

The boy was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital from near 57th Street and Mozart Avenue in the Gage Park neighborhood, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford, who had the boy's age as 6.

The boy suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder about 5:37 p.m., said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Daniel O'Brien, who said police did not yet have a definite age on the boy. He was initially believed to be in serious condition, officials said.

About 6:20 p.m., four people were shot in the 7300 block of South Laflin Street in the Englewood neighborhood, with one person dead on the scene, one critically injured and two  whose exact conditions were unavailable but who had been stabilized, O'Brien said.

Earlier, a 20-year-old man was critically injured after being shot in the Gresham neighorhood, police said.

The shooting happened at 4:30 p.m. on the 8700 block of South Loomis Avenue, said Chicago police news affairs officer Veejay Zala.

The man was shot in the abdomen and neck and was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Zala said. The man was pronounced dead at Christ Medical Center at 5:25 p.m., accoring to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

About the same time the boy was shot, a 23-year-old man was wounded in the buttocks in the 600 block of North Avers Avenue in the East Garfield Park neighborhood, O'Brien said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, and while an exact condition was not available for him, his condition had been stabilized.

So your saying guns are attacking people all by themselves

a gun is a tool like a hammer or a shovel or a butcher knife or a car

all these things can be used to kill but they are only tools

So if a human wants to kill someone and they dont have one of the tools above a rock will do a fine job of smashing a skull

Lets just ban rocks and only let police can carry them lmao

It would be good for KTJ to live in a government nanny state approved jungle where all the lions and tigers and other animals have rubber teeth and rubber claws and they only drink blended veggie juice through straws.

Just for KTJ to be really safe maybe he would be better off living in a rubber room and wearing a helmet.

Meanwhile in the real world where anyone can be attacked by some nutter human being any time he feels like it weapons are helpful and anything can be used as a weapon

FOUR MEN were killed and at least 12 other people have been wounded since late Friday morning in shootings across the city.

In the first attack, a man was shot and killed on Friday morning as he sat in his truck in West Englewood after dropping off his son at day care, according to police and a friend.

“I jumped up when I heard the gunshots and came to the window,” said the friend, Renee Ballard, who lives in the 7300 block of South Paulina Street where the shooting occurred about 9:20 a.m. “I saw his car window shot up and driver door open.”

Ballard said her daughter called 911 as Ballard went to see if the man was OK. She said he was breathing heavily and couldn't talk. “He didn’t say anything,” she said. “He couldn’t say anything.”

Authorities did not identify the victim, but Ballard said his name was Orlando Porter and he was 26.

Police say a dark sedan pulled up to the truck and someone fired, hitting the victim several times. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead, according to police.

Ballard said Porter would come over to her house every day after dropping his son off. He often drove her around on errands.

“If you were down, he always made you smile or laugh,” said Ballard, who has been trying to move out of her West Englewood home.

The next fatal shooting happened about 5:45 p.m. in the 800 block of North Latrobe Avenue in the city's South Austin neighborhood, said Officer Thomas Sweeney, a Chicago police spokesman.

In that shooting, a 20-year-old man suffered multiple gunshot wounds while inside a vehicle. He was taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, Sweeney said.

Police found over 30 shell casings at the scene. The shooting is believed to be gang-related, they said.

In another fatal shooting, a 24-year-old man died after getting shot in the head in the Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side about 8:10 p.m., said Officer Hector Alfaro, a Chicago police spokesman.

The man, identified as William Smith of the 900 block of North Springfield Avenue, was standing outside when an unknown attacker fired shots at him in the 3800 block of West Flournoy Street, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office and Alfaro.

He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition, and he was later pronounced dead at 9:46 p.m., according to the examiner's office and Alfaro.

In the latest fatal attack, a 22-year-old man was shot to death around 3:29 a.m. Saturday in the Avondale neighborhood on the Northwest Side, Alfaro said.

The man was walking in the 3200 block of West Addison Street when a male attacker inside a dark blue SUV drove by and fired shots, striking the man in the back. He was taken in critical condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead, Alfaro said.

At the scene of the shooting early on Saturday, police officers cordoned off a section of a sidewalk and a parking lot at the commercial plaza on the corner of Addison Street and Elston Avenue. Yellow crime tape blocked off the area near an O'Reilly Auto Parts store.

Detectives shone flashlights onto the ground, searching for shell casings and other evidence of the shooting.

Cars and trucks passed the crime scene, with some drivers slowing down to look.

A man sat inside a parked police car next to the scene. He sobbed as he talked into a cellphone.

At least 12 other people were wounded since Friday in shootings on the West, North and South sides.

Most recently, an 18-year-old man was wounded in a shooting around 6:50 a.m. Saturday in the Rogers Park neighborhood on the North Side, said Officer Janel Sedovic, a Chicago police spokeswoman.

The man was shot in the back, right arm and leg in the 1500 block of West Lunt Avenue. The man was taken to St. Francis Hospital in serious condition, Sedovic said.

About 3:35 a.m., a 17-year-old male teen was wounded in a drive-by shooting in the Little Village neighborhood on the Southwest Side, Alfaro said.

The teen was standing on a sidewalk in the 2400 block of South Spaulding Avenue when a dark-colored vehicle drove past and someone inside it fired shots, Alfaro said.

The teen was struck twice in the left knee, and he was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition stabilized, Alfaro said.

About 12:10 a.m., a 21-year-old man walked into Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center after getting shot in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, Alfaro said.

The man was driving in a white sedan and stopped at a red light in the 1400 block of North Western Avenue. A male attacker then walked up to his car and fired shots, Alfaro said.

The man was shot in the back, leg and arm. He managed to drive himself to the hospital, where his condition was stabilized, Alfaro said.

About 11:15 p.m., a 21-year-old man was wounded in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side, Alfaro said.

The man was on a porch in the 5600 block of South May Street when someone fired shots at him from the street, Alfaro said.

The man was shot in the leg and the groin and taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, Alfaro said.

Someone was being questioned in connection with the shooting, police said.

About 10:30 p.m., an 18-year-old man was wounded in a shooting in the Park Manor neighborhood on the South Side, Alfaro said.

The man was walking on the sidewalk in the 7100 block of South King Drive when a male attacker in a passing gray sedan fired shots at him, Alfaro said.

The man was wounded in the right thigh and taken to Holy Cross Hospital. He was later transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, Alfaro said.

About 8:59 p.m., a 21-year-old man walked into Northwestern Memorial Hospital after getting shot in the Cabrini Green neighborhood on the Near North Side, Alfaro said.

The man was walking on the street in the 1000 block of North Hudson Street when unknown attackers in a passing light-colored Nissan fired shots at him, striking him in the ankle, Alfaro said.

The man managed to get himself to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in good condition, Alfaro said.

At 7:47 p.m. two 17-year-old boys were shot on the 4200 block of South Archer Avenue, police said.

The two teens were walking outside when someone fired at them from a light-colored SUV, said Officer Ron Gaines, a Chicago police spokesman.

One of the boys was shot in the left leg and shoulder, and the second 17-year-old was shot in the left leg, Gaines said. Both were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where their conditions were stabilized, Gaines said.

At 6:18 p.m. a 37-year-old man was shot on the 8200 block of South Euclid Avenue, said Sweeney. The man was shot in the hip and managed to get himself to Trinity Hospital where his condition was stabilized, Gaines said.

About 11:45 a.m., a 24-year-old woman was shot in the 1100 block of North Kedvale Avenue in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago police spokesman.

According to preliminary reports, the woman was inside a vehicle when at least two people jumped in, announced a robbery and pulled out a gun. Nothing was taken but she was shot in the right thigh and back, Estrada said.

The woman crashed on the same block and was taken in good condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, he said.

About 2:08 p.m., a 17-year-old male teen was shot on the North Side in the city's Uptown neighborhood, police said.

That shooting happened in the 4600 block of North Magnolia Avenue, Sweeney said.

The 17-year-old suffered a wound to the leg. He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center where his condition was stabilized, Sweeney said.

About 5:09 p.m., another person was shot in the 8800 block of South Wood Street in the city's Gresham neighborhood, police said.

A 19-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the buttocks, and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center for treatment.

Chicago's staggering rise in gun violence and killings

THE Chicago Police Department has been under a national microscope since video footage, released last year, showed one of its officers firing more than a dozen bullets at 17-year-old Laquan McDonald.

Prosecutors charged the officer, Jason Van Dyke, with murder on the same day the recording was released over the objections of city officials. Intense protests followed, the city's police superintendent was dismissed, and the Justice Department announced an investigation of the Chicago police force.

This week, Mayor Rahm Emanuel — shrugging off recommendations made by the city's police board — selected Eddie Johnson, the department's chief of patrol, as the new interim police superintendent. Johnson, a Chicago native who has been on the force for more than a quarter of a century, takes over the nation's second-biggest local law enforcement agency as it faces a dip in officer morale and a surge in violence that the department called “unacceptably high” in a statement on Friday.

Violence is occurring at levels unseen for years. In the first quarter of 2016, 141 people were killed, up from 82 last year, according to police department data. The number of shootings surged to 677 from 359 a year earlier. The city is on track to have more than 500 killings this year, which would make this just the third year since 2004 that Chicago topped that figure.

Johnson said on Friday that the department “will remain tireless in its efforts to hold criminals accountable for their actions.” The department says most of the increase in violence stems from gang members using illegally acquired guns and is largely geographically clustered around the city's southern and western portions. (The city has also reported spikes in other crime categories across the board, including sexual assaults, robberies, batteries and thefts.)

This year is on track to far outpace the city's number of killings in 2015, which is a particularly worrisome fact considering that Chicago had more murders that year than any other city in the United States, according to the Brennan Center for Justice.

Other large cities that saw increases in killings last year have not seen jumps as extreme as Chicago's this year. The Los Angeles Police Department said that as of last week, there had been 67 homicides, up from 54 last year. Philadelphia said it had 63 homicide victims through Thursday, up from 62 a year ago. In New York, police reported a decrease — 60 murders as of March 20, down from 75 a year earlier.

Nationwide, there was a small uptick in violent crime last year, with murder rates going up in some of the largest cities.

However, in Chicago and across the country, these figures still trail what the nation saw in recent decades. Between 1991 and 1995, there were at least 800 murder victims in Chicago each year. The number began declining in the mid-1990s and has not approached that level since. As the Brennan Center noted in an analysis last fall of crime in the nation's largest cities, even though killings rose in 2015, “murder rates are still at all-time historic lows.”

In Chicago, the police department pointed to glimmers of hope while releasing grim crime statistics on Friday: Murders were up in March when compared to the same period last year, but not nearly as much as murders were up in each of the two previous months. More gun arrests were made and more investigative stops took place, the department said. Overall, though, there appears to have been a decline in both guns seized and stops made so far this year; DNAinfo reported on Thursday that both figures tumbled in the first three months of this year.

There are numerous issues that could be at play, including a fracturing of gangs leading to more conflicts, said Robert M. Lombardo, an associate professor of criminology and criminal justice at Loyola University Chicago. He also said officers in Chicago and other cities may also be feeling hesitant amid protests over policing.

“The officers are just having second thoughts about being aggressive,” said Lombardo, a former Chicago police officer. “You can't determine a trend with one month's worth of data, but everyone pretty much expects it to be a long, hot, bad summer and for this to continue.”

Even before the firestorm following the McDonald video, Emanuel was criticized for suggesting that officers had stepped back from policing due to nationwide demonstrations over how police use lethal force.

During a discussion in Washington last fall involving U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch and numerous mayors and police chiefs, Emmanuel said: “We have allowed our police department to get fetal and it is having a direct consequence. They have pulled back from the ability to interdict … they don't want to be a news story themselves, they don't want their career ended early, and it's having an impact.”

The McDonald video went public the next month, following efforts by Emanuel and his office to fight its release. City leaders and protesters called for Emanuel to oust his police chief, Garry McCarthy. Emanuel, a Democrat in a tumultuous second term, initially stood by McCarthy, then reversed course and asked him to resign. Still, public anger remained focused on Emanuel.

Last month, the Chicago Police Board nominated three people to be considered as the next police superintendent. Emanuel ignored their suggestions and, on Monday, said he was making Johnson his third police superintendent in four months. In his announcement, Emanuel asked the Police Board to conduct another search later this year, but the board said on Friday that it would wait to see what happens with reports suggesting that the ordinance guiding the selection of superintendents could be changed.

Johnson has numerous things to accomplish on the job. One is reviving the morale of the police force, something Emanuel and the department both highlighted in statements this week. The department said that with Johnson's appointment, the force has refocused on fighting violence in the streets, beefing up morale and restoring trust in the department.

(The Chicago police union drew sharp criticism this week for hiring Van Dyke, the officer charged with murdering McDonald, to work as a janitor, a decision the union defended as helping an officer who was in financial need because he was suspended without pay. The union's president did not respond to a request for comment.)

In naming Johnson as interim police superintendent, Emanuel specifically highlighted the veteran officer's history of fighting crime. His office touted Johnson's experience as deputy chief of patrol for Chicago's “Area Central” region, describing how gun-related violence fell by nearly a third in 2013 under Johnson's leadership and how shootings also declined the following year.

Johnson said on Friday that the department will work to fight crime, but he added in a statement that “we all have a part to play in creating a safer Chicago.”

“In the coming weeks and months, I plan on meeting with and listening to a range of Chicagoans — from activists and elected officials to ministers and parents — to find ways that we can come together to build mutual trust and lasting partnerships that will make our streets safer for everyone,” he said.

So....why isn't this happening in countries, such as New Zealand, which have more effective gun-control laws and restrictions?

After all, with all those guns in Chicago to keep everybody safe, the number of shootings should be going down, according to the gun nuts!

Possibly because theres not 40 million people in NZ - with a commensurate increase in the number of mental defectives?

[Damn!  Why didn't I think of that!]

There aren't 40 million people living in Chicago, either.

In fact, not even remotely close to it....

you saying there's not 59  gangs with 100,000  gang members in Chicago you can check its easy a lot of them are just kids 13 and 14 most of the shootings there is gang related you call it a conspiracy theory all you like

but they are doing most of the killings they are diff ethnic groups doing crime and a huge drug trade

and they are bad people with guns can you figure that out you know being criminals they are not allowed guns but that doesn't stop them lol

in a perfect world like we live in we don't need guns do we ?
