Pilot killed in Central Otago helicopter crash

LATEST: A pilot has been killed in a helicopter crash in Central Otago tonight.

The crash, near Cardrona Valley Rd, halfway between Wanaka and Queenstown, was reported to emergency services at 8.38pm.

About 40 minutes later police found the wreckage of the Robinson R22 helicopter and the body of the female pilot, Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) spokesman Mike Richards said.

She was believed to be the partner of the helicopter business operator, but this had not been confirmed, he said.

Emergency services, including two police cars, a fire unit, a fire rescue van and an ambulance, set up a base outside a house at Spotburn Station while they searched for the wreckage, a person at the scene said.

Two helicopters appeared to have been involved in the search, along with both search and rescue staff.

Richards said a CAA safety investigation team would be on site tomorrow to inspect the wreckage and determine the cause of the crash, Richards said.

The Transport Accident Investigation Commission would not be investigating, he said.

Female pilot killed in helicopter crash

A female pilot has been killed in a helicopter crash near Wanaka this evening.

The Civil Aviation Authority confirmed the female pilot, the sole occupant and the partner of the operator of the aircraft, died in the crash.

The helicopter was a Robinson R22.

Inspector Alan Weston of police southern communications said they received a report of a crash at 8.30pm and sent emergency services to the area to search for the aircraft.

Two helicopters with flashlights circled the crash site on the Pisa Range, near Wanaka, this evening.

Police said a witness had seen the helicopter drop out of the sky after its rotor stopped.

A spokeswoman for Wanaka-based Aspiring Helicopters Alex Ford said the company had sent a helicopter to the scene after a request from police.

Police asked the company to "go in a hurry'' because it was getting dark.

District: Southern

Fatal helicopter Crash update

Short description: Fatal helicopter Crash update

Full description:
Emergency services responded to a fatal Helicopter crash on the Criffel Range, near Wanaka last night.

Sergeant Aaron Nicholson, the Wanaka Police SAR Coordinator, confirmed that a Robinson 22 Helicopter crashed at about 8.40pm last night, Thursday 8th of November 2012. He stated that Police, Fire, St John and LandSAR personnel all responded with some urgency to the scene with support from the Otago rescue helicopter out of Dunedin and another Helicopter from Queenstown.

Nicholson stated that the joint response ran very smoothly and emergency services, including LandSAR teams, got to the site to find significant wreckage and the sole occupant, near the wreckage, deceased.

Fire crews on site contained any fire risk, while Police enquiries and scene examination confirmed the Pilot was the only person in the helicopter.

Further enquiries indicated that the deceased and a friend had earlier flown from Queenstown to Wanaka Airport to pick up another light aircraft and then both returned to Queenstown via the Cardrona Valley, one flying the aircraft the other flying the R22 Helicopter. The deceased's friend arrived in Queenstown unaware of any incident  involving the R22 Helicopter.

The deceased was a 52 year old female from Queenstown. NOK are yet to be advised and it is expected that the deceased name will be released later this morning.

Police have reported the matter to the Coroner and Civil Aviation Authority for further investigation.
