Its actually a chemical (BPA) that mimics the role of the natural hormones.  Its an environmental estrogen.
Its released something like 50 times faster when the plastic bottle is washed in hot water - as we do with babys bottles for instance.    Also used on the inside of food cans, like sketti tins 

I read something a while ago where old bottles, up to 10 years old still produce the same amount of BPA as a new one.  They dont know the affect on humans - well they wont admit to knowing it.
