Shooting up America: Guns are a national disgrace

By Mark Morford, SF Gate Columnist | 3:33PM PDT - Friday, October 02, 2015

If everyone just walked around like this all the time, in cafes and schoolyards, in traffic and at work, America would be so safe and peaceful. Just like Jesus intended.
If everyone just walked around like this all the time, in cafes and schoolyards, in traffic and at work, America would be so safe and peaceful.
Just like Jesus intended.

GUNS are, in a word, perfect.

Guns are unparalleled, really; they are small masterpieces of precision engineering, one of humanity's most deliberate, perfectly designed tools. There is simply no denying a gun's intention, no possible misunderstanding of its reason for existing.

Unlike cars, knives, drugs, alcohol or any other freely available, potentially deadly items which can (and do) kill lots of people, guns are the only commercially available instrument in the world that we designed specifically for the purpose of the eradication of life. A gun's nature is, as they say in the tech world, baked in to the hardware. It understands nothing else.

Which is to say: Guns are death made physical, palpable in the hand. They are our basest, least sacred energies — hate, fear, paranoia — compressed into metal and explosives. No one holds or fires a gun without some fundamental understanding of this fact — that he could, if he so desired, kill anything he wanted, right now, in an instant — and that’s essentially all you're supposed do with it.

The fact that most gun owners do not do this, and manage to resist using their guns for what we specifically created them to do, is merely incidental, and actually a kind of failure: it denies the gun's primary objective. Gun owners actually know this, as a warped point of pride. “Hey, I own lots of guns and don't kill things.” How nice for you. Tell it to all the dead.

As the nature of a gun is the abject destruction of life, to use it merely for target practice or for “pleasure” is, essentially, to do it a disservice; you are thwarting its objective, insulting the lethal disposition we ourselves poured into the molten metal. Much like a sports car that “begs” to be driven fast, or an expensive designer dress that begs to be worn to an extravagant gala, a gun begs only to be fired at another living thing, to annihilate it. And eventually, it will be.

If past mass shootings are any indication, gun sales in America will enjoy a nice sales surge after the Oregon massacre. Because of course the answer to all the gun deaths is ALWAYS… more guns.

Another mass shooting, another opportunity for the cowards of the Republican party to refuse to do anything, and the NRA to snicker and burn.
Another mass shooting, another opportunity for the cowards of the Republican party to refuse to do anything,
and the NRA to snicker and burn.

This is why we have the headlines all wrong: Guns are not being abused or wielded incorrectly in America. They are not “falling into the wrong hands”, ill-begotten by “evil people” and “crazies” and “psychopaths”. This is not true in the slightest.

Just the opposite, actually. When yet another mass killing occurs, when another woman is murdered by her ex-husband (which happens every single day in America, BTW), when another despondent teen kills herself with her dad's gun (ditto), when more males — and it is almost always males — shoot each other in the street, when more schoolchildren die at the hands of effortlessly well-armed adults, these are not tragedies. It's exactly what we expect to happen.

The guns are, in a very real way, just fulfilling the destiny we instilled into them. They are doing exactly what we designed them to do, what we demand they do, as physical extensions of our fear and rage. You can't shove 10 billion tons of carcinogens into the atmosphere and not expect massive outbreaks of cancer. You can't put 300 million precision tools of death into the culture and not expect their latent, intrinsic objective to be realized, every single day.

This is why all religious and spiritual traditions the world over agree: Guns are for cowards. They provide only the thinnest illusion of authority, the ugliest veneer of control, the most artificial aspect of authentic manhood.

Proof? Simple: Just remove any gun fetishist's (or terrorist's, or mass shooter's) stockpile of weapons, and watch what happens. They are instantly deflated, lost, rendered vulgar and human. All illusions of power and machismo vaporize, leaving only the base energies of hate and fear they often don't understand, much less know how to transmute into something like kindness and love.

Do you wish to pretend otherwise? To claim that guns are effective for safety, or self defense, or a warped sense of patriotism? This is not merely laughable, it's the opposite of the truth, of established fact.

Chris Harper-Mercer. Not necessarily a “psychopath”, or “pure evil” (most mass shooters aren't). Just another severely maladjusted, angry kid with far too-easy access to all the guns he could possibly want. Take away that rifle in that MySpace pic, and he's just another kid in dire need of therapy.

Ah, America. So smug, so phallically ma-adjusted, so fetishistic for your perfectly made tools of cowardice and death.
Ah, America. So smug, so phallically ma-adjusted, so fetishistic for your perfectly made tools of cowardice and death.

Put it this way: If guns really conferred stability and protection, we'd be the safest, most peaceful nation on Earth. We are, instead, the most violent and deadly. We are viewed the world over as the most dazzling of bullies, and of hypocrites: We pretend to promote the values of democracy, peace and freedom the world over, and yet we kill one another — and anyone who disagrees with us — more horrifically, and more consistently, than any terrorist cult could ever imagine.

The bottom line is simple enough: America is, by every metric you can name, a far worse place for all our guns. They bring nothing of positive, uplifting value: no kindness, no strength, no peace, no divinity, no sense of community or human connection. Quite the opposite. Guns are the antithesis of love and compassion; they advance the human experiment not at all, and in fact, shatter and humiliate it with every pull of the trigger.

from the Los Angeles Times....

‘Stuff happens’ is America's feeble response to mass shootings

By DAVID HORSEY | 5:00AM - Monday, October 05, 2015

JEB BUSH committed a mini-gaffe when, in reference to last week's horrific mass shooting in Roseburg, Oregon, he blurted out the phrase, “Stuff happens!” Those flippant words came at the end of an extended, pandering ramble about gun rights in front of a group of Republican voters. Essentially, Bush was saying there is not much anyone can do about these deadly attacks that now happen on an almost weekly basis.

Imagine if Jeb's brother, George, had lifted that bullhorn at ground zero in the days after the 9/11 catastrophe and said, “Stuff happens!” It would not have been seen as a presidential profile in courage. On the other hand, a “Stuff happens!” attitude might have kept the United States out of costly, ineffectual wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Arguably, that would have been a good thing.

Jeb Bush may have fumbled into a truth: A president cannot fix every awful situation. Sometimes, attempting a fix can even make things worse. Do mass shootings fall into that category, though?

Most Americans are appalled by the regularity with which these gruesome incidents occur. There is a dispiriting sameness to them: A social misfit with no friends and a grudge against the world buys a gun — in the case of the Roseburg shooter, 14 guns — and picks a locale — a school, a theater, a military facility, a church — where he proceeds to vent his anger and alienation by gunning down as many innocent people as he can before the police show up and stop him.

Generally, there are three remedies proposed to deal with this terrible phenomenon. The National Rifle Association insists the answer is to put more guns in the hands of teachers, students, ministers — pretty much everyone — so they can fight back when an attack happens. Liberals argue for tougher gun laws to make it harder for men with twisted minds to obtain weapons. And people across the political spectrum say there should be a better system to deal with the mentally ill. Each of these ideas has serious limitations.

Even though Umpqua Community College, the site of the Roseburg shooting, is a “gun-free zone”, several students told reporters they had guns with them on campus. None rushed to confront the shooter, however, and one of those students, a military veteran, gave a sensible explanation. He said he refrained from using his weapon because he feared the police would mark him as the bad guy and shoot him by mistake.

Obviously, these situations are more confused and complex than a showdown at high noon in an Old West movie. The addition of more guns to the equation does not guarantee a better result. And plenty of people are repelled by the idea that packing a pistol should be a requirement to safely navigate public spaces. Do we really need to arm ourselves as if American towns are as treacherous as Mogadishu or Fallouja?

What about more gun laws? A majority of Americans support universal background checks, better regulation of gun dealers, liability insurance requirements for gun owners, smart gun technology and other measures. Although the most shrill 2nd Amendment defenders will scream about their rights being taken away by an oppressive government, efforts to better manage gun ownership would almost certainly reduce the horrendous number of deaths attributable to firearms, numbering more than 90 every day of the year.

However, 60% of those gun deaths are suicides, with the rest attributable to domestic violence, accidents, inner-city gang killings and general criminal mayhem. None of the proposed tougher regulations would have prevented the vast majority of the mass killings. The killer in Roseburg bought his guns legally. The only thing that would have stopped him would be a complete firearms ban. After several mass shootings in Australia, guns were outlawed in that country and there has not been a single mass shooting since.

The problem there is obvious: It ain't gonna happen. Even if one thinks repeal of the 2nd Amendment and confiscation of all guns in private hands is a great idea, does anyone think there is even a remote chance that the USA will go the way of Australia?

Then there is the mental health factor. Yes, for a host of reasons, this country needs to have better treatment of troubled minds, but, short of locking up every one of the thousands of depressed, antisocial men in this country, mental health experts say it is nearly impossible to identify the very small number of them who are prone to pick up a gun and start killing.

It is a terrible quandary with no obvious solution. No wonder some people — even presidential candidates — just shrug and say, “Stuff happens!”

...probably more people killed in car accidents in America....wonder if they should ban cars...

...but seriously....its sad for  all the families of the victims...

...but in the end...there are thousands of other murders and mass murders in other parts of the world every day that is not big news...are American lives worth more than the children being bombed by Russia in Syria Roll Eyes

Be keen to know the reason you seem to have some sort of fetish about American people being innocent victims, but not the many more others.....just curious Roll Eyes

You forgot to mention the DOCTORS and KIDS wasted by the Americans when they shot-up a charity hospital in Afghanistan using gattling-gun style 50mm cannons firing 8,000 rounds per minute. And the 'merkins continued to pour 50mm cannon shells into that hospital for almost an hour, in spite of the charity organisation Doctors Without Borders contacting the Pentagon and informing them that their AC-130 gunship was shooting up a hospital.

Real despicable cunts, those Americans....they're as bad as ISIS when they murder DOCTORS and KIDS. The 'merkins must have learnt that behaviour from their Israeli mates.

No wonder 'merkins have no qualms about running amok with guns in schools committing mass-murder. They're only following the example set by their military forces.

Timothy McVeigh learnt that sort of behaviour when he served in the 'merkin military and was taught that killing kids and civilians was mere collateral damage, and therefore nothing to worry about. No wonder he considered civilians working in a federal building to be mere collateral damage as he waged war against the federal government by attacking their building with a huge bomb.

Yep....Americans can be real sick cunts, alright.

America's Guns-R-Us mindset at work....

Christians ‘serious about their faith’ should consider
getting guns, Lieutenant Governor says

LIKE many Americans, Tennessee Lieutenant Governor Ron Ramsey (Republican) took to social media to post his reaction to the mass shooting last week at Oregon's Umpqua Community College. Ramsey's Facebook post Friday focused on one aspect of the tragedy: that the gunman reportedly asked his victims whether they were Christian and then shot them if they answered yes.

Ramsey's solution? “Fellow Christians who are serious about their faith” should “think about getting a handgun permit.” He included a link to a state government Web site instructing residents on how they can acquire such a permit.

“The recent spike in mass shootings across the nation is truly troubling,” wrote Ramsey, the speaker of the Tennessee Senate. “Whether the perpetrators are motivated by aggressive secularism, jihadist extremism or racial supremacy, their targets remain the same: Christians and defenders of the West.”

He continued: “While this is not the time for widespread panic, it is a time to prepare.” Then, he added: “Our enemies are armed. We must do likewise.”

(click on the above image to open the full facebook posting)

The shooting rampage on the rural campus in southwest Oregon left 10 dead, including gunman Chris Harper Mercer. Police recovered 14 guns from Mercer’s apartment and the crime scene, and authorities said he had a fascination with weaponry.

Investigators have said little publicly about Mercer's motives. Several eyewitnesses relayed accounts that Harper specifically asked people whether they were Christians before shooting them.

Previous stories of school shooters targeting Christians have gained widespread attention, most notably two girls killed in the Columbine High School shooting in 1999. Initial reports about the circumstances surrounding their deaths were later questioned.

Ramsey's call for Christians to arm themselves in the wake of a mass shooting drew rebuke from some of his colleagues in the Tennessee statehouse. State Representative Jon Ray Clemmons (Democrat) said in a statement that Ramsey's comments “reek of fear-mongering and religious crusading.”

“There is an eerie absence of logic in his statement that ties one's Christian faith to firearms ownership that is offensive to all religions,” Clemmons said. “Senator Ramsey is essentially saying that we should all run out and get a handgun carry permit to prove how serious we are about our Christian faith.”

Boy, 11, dies in hunting incident in Kaingaroa forest

Connor Phillips was shot dead during a hunting trip.

On Sunday morning 11-year-old Connor Brian Phillips was enjoying the final sunshine on the last day of school holidays.

Hours later he was dead - shot during a hunting trip.

Connor had gone out hunting with a group of adults in a remote part of the Kaingaroa Forest - less than 20km from his home in the small settlement of Reporoa, south of Rotorua.

As the hunt came to an end about 1.30pm, an adult with the group was unloading a firearm when the incident occurred, police said.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, in an area of forest accessible by vehicles off Western Boundary Rd and Tiriti Rd.

But it was too late and Connor died at the scene.

Four dead in Colorado Springs officer-involved shooting

MULTIPLE SHOOTINGS on Saturday in Colorado Springs left four people dead, including the suspected gunman.

The chaotic scene, which erupted in the morning, left residents shaken after three victims were shot and killed on the streets and sidewalks of the neighborhood. Minutes after the first shots were fired, the violent episode ended when the suspected gunman turned his rifle against Colorado Springs police officers and started shooting.

The officers returned fire.

Investigators released few details about the shootings. They worked through the day on Saturday, combing the crime scene, which stretched several city blocks.

But witnesses interviewed by The Gazette described waking up to gunshots, blood and confusion. It was unclear whether the shooter knew the victims or chose them at random.

Officers were called to the 200 block of North Prospect Street around 8:45 a.m., said Lieutenant Catherine Buckley, spokeswoman for the Colorado Springs Police Department. While en route to the scene, officers spotted a man matching the description of the suspect near Platte Avenue and Wasatch Street.

The suspect fired multiple rounds at officers before they returned fire, Buckley said.

Investigators have not released the shooter's name. They did not provide details about the suspect's weapon.

Police were not looking for any other suspects.

Matt Abshire, who lives in the area, told The Gazette he saw a man shoot another man with a rifle around 9 a.m. The 21-year-old left his apartment and followed the shooter who was westbound on Platte Avenue.

While on the phone with police, Abshire said he saw the shooter turn to his left and fire at two women. By the time Abshire reached the two women, one of them had stopped breathing, he told The Gazette.

“She was dead,” Abshire said.

It appeared one of the woman had been shot in the face, he said.

Saturday afternoon, Buckley confirmed that three people were killed. She declined to provide any identifying information about the victims — including their gender.

Aaron Nicks also spoke to The Gazette. Nicks said he saw police officers fire several shots at the suspected gunman before he fell to the ground.

Officers quickly loaded the gunman into a vehicle, Nicks said.

Following department protocol, the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, Buckley said.

The police department will investigate the events that led up to the officer-involved shooting, Buckley said.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office will investigate the officer-involved shooting. Once completed, that investigation will be turned over to the El Paso County District Attorney's Office for review.

“This covers a very large area of some major streets in Colorado Springs,” Buckley said, adding that many streets in the area would be closed until late Saturday night.

So if one of your kids was living in America (attending university there, perhaps) and got shot by a nutter with a gun, you'd simply shrug your shoulders and say, “so what....innocent people die all over the world every day” and “ain't democracy a great thing...gives the power to the (majority) of the people.”??

Perhaps you should move yourself and your family to the USA if you think it is such a shit-hot place.

I reckon you'd fit right in with those retards in the south.

And if one of them shot you, well hey....“ain't democracy a great thing”, eh?

It would be no great loss....simply removing a STUPID RETARD from the gene pool.

NYPD: Attacker dead after report of ‘several people shot’ at Bronx Hospital

Authorities announced the shooter's death about an hour after responding to the incident.

A FORMER EMPLOYEE opened fire inside one of New York City's busiest hospitals on Friday afternoon, killing one doctor and wounding six other people before taking his own life, New York police said.

New York Police Department Commissioner James O'Neill said during an early evening news conference that police received a 911 call at 2:55 p.m. about an active shooter wearing a white lab coat and armed with an assault rifle at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital. Responding officers located six victims on the 16th floor – five with serious injuries and another who had been shot in the leg — and another victim, a female doctor who had been shot and killed, on the 17th floor.

“There are several doctors who are fighting for their lives right now,” New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said during a press conference. “The shooter killed himself, but not before having done horrible damage.”

O’Neill said that the shooter then attempted to set himself on fire on the hospital's 17th floor, prompting the building's fire alarms and sprinkler systems to activate. Police later found the gunman dead with what they believe to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Associated Press, citing anonymous police sources, identified the gunman as a family medicine physician who previously worked at the hospital.

Raymond Thomas, 52, said he was visiting a friend on the fourth floor of the building across the street from the hospital. They were listening to music and heard a noise but couldn't be sure is was gunfire. “All I know is I looked over (out the window) and saw people coming out in a hurry,” he said. A few minutes later, he said, he saw the police presence and saw people being hurried around by police. “It's really crazy to see a shooting at a hospital, you know?”

Staff members of the 1000-bed hospital told local media that soon after the shooting began they received a “code silver” alert — meaning there was an active shooter, and they began to instruct patients to hide.

“The cops started rushing in,” Michael Bias, an employee on the hospital's ground floor emergency room, told ABC-7 in New York, in a live interview soon after the shooting. “We tried to keep the patients calm…. All we heard was the commotion.”

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio praised police and firefighters who responded to the shooting and hospital staff who helped hide and comfort patients.

“Even in the midst of this horror there were many, many acts of heroism,” de Blasio said.

Even hours after the shooting, some family members of hospital employees and patients remained at the scene, waiting to be reconnected with those still being held inside the hospital.

Just before 7 p.m., Margaret Howard, 45, paced near the police tape cordoning off the hospital, phone pressed to her ear.

“I'm still trying to reach her,” Howard said of her mother, who had been a patient at the hospital for more than a week. “I don't think she was hurt but I just want to check on her. She's old and probably scared.”

Hahaha.....the only good American is a DEAD American.

Good to see the stupid Americans are working towards eradicating themselves from the planet.

After all, they voted Donald Trump into the White House, so Americans are too stupid to be allowed to infest the planet.

Guns were fired at Northland shooting site regularly

Quinn Patterson is said to have liked guns, which he fired off "on a daily basis?

The occupant of a house where two women were shot dead used guns on a daily basis, locals say.

Wendy Campbell Rodgers and her daughter Natanya Campbell were shot dead when they arrived at the rented property in rural land east of Whangarei to carry out repairs.

They were accompanied by a contractor, Jeff Pipe who was also shot. He is still in hospital with serious injuries.

Wendy Campbell arrived at the house with daughter Natanya when they were shot dead.

Nearby resident Brad Walters confirmed a man called Quinn Patterson lived at the address where the tragedy occurred.

MORNING REPORT/RNZWhangarei double shooting: Lois Williams at the scene

Two women were shot dead and one man escaped with gunshot wounds at a rural Whangarei house on Wednesday. The house remained under police guard overnight and reporter Lois Williams is at the scene.

Police haven approached for confirmation regarding Patterson's involvement in the tragedy.

Patterson is believed to have died when the house went up in flames following a stand-off with police.

Walters said he and other neighbours were growing concerned with the amount of shooting being heard coming from the property Patterson was renting.

ZB's Barry Soper is 'shocked' after his son was stabbed on night out

A broadcaster is shocked after his son was violently stabbed on a night out in the Wellington CBD.

Newstalk ZB political editor Barry Soper was on his way to visit his son Henry in Wellington Hospital when he spoke to the Herald about the incident.

"I was shocked, totally shocked. I can't understand someone coming to town carrying a knife.

"The guy that did that came with the intention of inflicting harm on somebody, unfortunately it was Henry."

from the Las Vegas Sun....

Multiple victims hospitalized after shooting on Las Vegas Strip

Video footage taken during the shooting rampage, which involved a machinegun on fully-automatic can be viewed (and listened to) HERE

What's the bet if it turns out to be white-trash American gun nut/s, Donald J. Trump will REFUSE to call it terrorism.

...and even in little old NZ we had 2 deaths from fire arms...it ain't the guns..it's people who kill😉

Neighbour shocked by double shooting in Whangarei

Whangarei residents reacted with disbelief to two people being shot dead in the city on Saturday.

A Whangarei man heard three loud bangs just before two men received fatal gunshot wounds on Saturday.

The incident unfolded on Saturday when Whangarei police were called to an address on McMillan Avenue in Kamo.

One man died at the scene, the second was taken to hospital in a critical condition but died from his injuries.

The neighbour, who did not want to be named, said he was shocked by the shooting.

"We unfortunately didn't know these neighbours, our street is very quiet so it's unusual for this to have happened."

The man said he thought the loud bangs were someone using a hammer and didn't know it was a shooting until a friend in Auckland contacted him.

Autopsies  would be carried out on both men, who were known to each other.

Police said they were in the "very early" stages of an investigation and did not believe there was any ongoing threat to the public.

Police said they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

Hey....it may be more than 50 dead in Las Vegas (I notice the idiot tries to minimise it with his usual inane bullshit), but at least its only dead Americans, so no great loss, eh?

Hell...they can all rush out and buy a shitload more guns and try to reach the grand total of 100 dead next time.

After all, its only America where guns are plentiful and life is cheap.

There a lot more innocent people being killed in other parts of the world daily through violence and other causes , I think a life is a life whether it's American, kiwi, Syrian or any other.
..America is a democracy, they want to be able to have guns, if they thought guns were a problem they would vote in politicians who promised to change the laws😉

...and America has a lot more people than NZ..about 70 times more..so 2 dead here would need to be 140 dead there to a similar scale....🙄

...but if you are scared....please don't go there😉
