A mystery sock wearing man is wanted by Porirua Police after a video surfaced on YouTube of him acting suspiciously near cars with socks on his hands and feet.

Porirua Police Sergeant Steve McCormick said the video footage had been given to police by a man who had installed the camera in his Papakowhai driveway after someone interfered with his car in December.

Police have utilised social media to try and identify the man - uploading images from the video to their Facebook page.

The video, taken overnight on January 17/18 and uploaded to YouTube, shows the man walking up the driveway of a house in Kinloch Place, Papakowhai.

After being illuminated by a security light, the man wanders between three cars parked in the driveway, appearing to look in windows before climbing inside a four wheel drive. He emerges empty handed and meanders his way back down the long driveway.

"From what we can make out it looks like he has socks on his feet and his hands, it's interesting isn't it,'' Mr McCormick said.

Around the same time that evening a silver and gray 1994 Suzuki Vitara, registration SS1880, was stolen from the address next door.

According to data posted by Porirua Police on their Facebook page there have been 51 thefts of items from inside cars in the Porirua area from the period of December 15th to January 11th.

In December, Porirua Police said they had noticed an increase in the reported thefts of items from vehicles left unlocked by their owners in driveways of their homes.

"In particular vehicles left in the northern suburbs of Whitby, Papakowhai, Paremata and Mana have experienced this increase in theft."

Any one with information as to the identity of the man is asked to phone Porirua Police on 04 238 1401 or to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
