'Accidental Millionaire' pushing for discharge
The judge presiding over the Kara Hurring case has reserved a decision by her lawyer to have her discharged without conviction on 28 charges.
All the previously laid theft charges against Hurring, adding up to around $7 million, have been dropped by the Crown, along with money laundering charges adding up to around $500,000.
Judge McGuire at the Rotorua District Court is presiding over the highly-publicised case that has seen Hurring charged with two counts of international money laundering to the value of $230,000, relating to activities in Macau.
The 26 other charges are theft-related from within New Zealand.
Hurring, 32, of Rotorua, left New Zealand for Hong Kong in 2009 after $10 million was mistakenly deposited in her then boyfriend's Westpac bank account after he applied for a $100,000 overdraft.
The bank, left red-faced by the error, fired the teller responsible for misplacing the decimal point and has been working with authorities in China to recover the rest of the money. Gao is still at large in China.
