I think this was short sighted. No bank is going to loan on a severely quake damaged house. Quote Greg Appleby's insurer said his quake-damaged Avonside property would cost $108,000 to repair, but the commission had valued the damage bill at $54,000. Appleby said he was quoted both figures in November. But he had been unable to get an explanation for the $54,000 discrepancy. This isn't the first instance of this happening that I've heard of. Quote Ron and Lyn Edwards have been living in a caravan next to their Dallington house since November, but have not received an accommodation allowance from their insurers for more than a month. They took out a loan to buy the caravan after the insurance company refused to pay for it instead of providing an accommodation and relocation allowance. We have been considering renting an on-site caravan for the length of time we need to move out. We can also utilise the sleepout then. We still need to find out from Fletchers when and how long it is going to take though. I can see why they wouldn't pay for the caravan (which then becomes an asset), but I can't see why a rental caravan wouldn't be OK. Another issue is that Ecan have deemed that our fireplace needs to be replaced by April. We were going to do that this Christmas, but have been unable to due to the earthquake. The closer it gets to April the harder it is going to be to arrange due to the volume of people doing the same thing, not to mention the fact that we cannot do it prior to Fletchers overhaul. If Ecan think we are going to sit here and freeze our arses off by not using a fire we are unable to replace due to their red tape combined with EQC and Fletchers, they have another thing coming. |
