What weird and wonderful plants shall grow this year?

So's mine, so much choice, my mind is in a whirl

I had a really good crop from the half dozen King of the Blues beans I grew last summer. Taste was good but the pretty purple turns to dark green when cooked. I picked them for weeks

Mum grew Wonder of Venice - they were devine and huge, like 3/4 inch wide yellow ribbons. The seeds (beans) inside were small but the pods were tender again they kept cropping for weeks.

The plants for the Branywine Pink tomatoes were weak. They required sturdy staking and didn't fruit overly well. The Gold Nugget, yellow pear and whatever the small red ones that Mum grew (not sweet 100) produced as many tomatoes as we could give away.

Can you recommend a good acid free tomato to grow?  I had some really good ones last year that produced a bumper crop but they were given to me as seedlings and I have no idea what type they were. The person that gave them to me can't remember either.

They may have been Roma.

I didn't get the seeds from Kings, but for the sake of trying something different I have bought some "asparagus pea seeds"  from Trademe....   


The asparagus pea is one of the prettiest vegetables on the planet. Its Latin name, Tetragonolobus purpurea, is even prettier. The genus epithet, meaning "four-lobed," describes the four little frills or wings that line the plant's edible seedpods and give them a look of foursquare frivolity. The species name is meant to describe the purple color of the flowers—although, in fact, the flowers are deep red.

I have heard of them but haven't grown them.

A fast growing plant that grows like clover and will smother weeds. It produces numerous red Pea-like flowers that are highly decorative. Soon after blooming the flowers produce winged pods that are delicious to eat. Steamed and served with a knob of butter they are said by gourmets to combine the flavour of both Peas and Asparagus. Harvest pods when approximately 3cm long. (80 days)

It is that time of year again.

The new Kings Seed catalouge arrived a fortnight ago.

I have studied it written a list of must haves and a wish list then passed it to Mum so she can study and order.

I just placed my order...

Even with a handwritten list and pretty much sticking to it...ok I did order half of the wish list as well I was still so close to getting 3 packets free that I ordered a couple of things on impulse...

No doubt Mr Sp will frown if he figures out how much 20 packets of seed cost (including the 3 free ones).

Hey, it is cheaper buying the seed than buying punnets or single tomato plants or bags of supermarket salad/lettuce.

Sweetpea, does the King's catalouge have Tomatillo seeds?
I grew some last year from seed I bought on TM  will definitely grow again this year.

I thought about ordering some but decided that I was going to have problems finding space for all my tomatoes as it was. I am planning to grown 9 different varities this year.

BTW I have recieved my order already. 2 days after placing it online. Howzat for service.
