Title: I HATE Vista!
Post by: TokGal on June 15, 2009, 09:56:56 am
I never had the same problems with XP.
Now, whenever a windows update is installed and the computer goes to restart after installation, it doesn't! It switches off. Then when I start it up again it comes up with the repair thingy, attempts to repair, can't and so gives me the option of going back to a restore point, which is the only way I can get it to start again. Then of course the windows update want to install again and the same rigmarole happens. It's driving me mad.

Hmmmmm....I see Windows Vista Service Pack 2 has just appeared as an important update — 343.9MB.

Shall I, or shan't I? Decisions, decisions, decisions!

Installation Tips:

• Your computer will restart several times during the installation process:
Make certain you've saved your work and closed all open applications before beginning the install.

• Disable (1) your anti-virus application, (2) any real-time system protections afforded by any anti-spyware applications (except Defender), & (3) your third-party firewall (if any) and then (4) enable the Windows Firewall before installing or uninstalling Vista SP2.

• The installation process can take an hour or more: If you're installing SP2 on a portable computer, make sure that you plug-in the power cord and have the battery inserted into its bay.

• Vista SP1 is a prerequisite for installing SP2. If you use Windows Update or the Automatic Update feature in Windows Vista, you will not be offered the option to install SP2 until you first install SP1.

All done!

The reason I was a bit iffy about downloading and installing Vista SP2 was because I wasn't sure if it was also going to automatically install IE8 with it. I had IE8 installed on this computer for a couple of days, but didn't like a few things it did when accessing these groups, so I got rid of it. Fortunately, since the SP2 update, I've discovered that my browser is still IE7, so I'm happy.

sp1 and 2 available from the Windows Update Web site.

Note sp1 must be installed before you can install sp2

To obtain these updates, follow these steps:

Click Start,
click Control Panel, a
nd then click Security.
Under Windows Update,
click Check for updates.

note these are large updates and if using 56k may take all night and may not succede in that case try and use friends broadband connection.

I have found that many folk that have problems with thier operating systems whether it be xp vista or whatever have automatic update disabled or are on snailmail and have accumulated a gret number of updates that have not been installed.

Most if not all these updates are correcting problems they are having and always improve performance, stability and safety.

by using windows update as shown in previous post microsoft will scan your computer and provide a list of updates you need.

It is important that all are installed.........this is a problem if you do not have broadband as some are quiet large and some have to be installed proir to others...... like sp1 before sp2 etc.

If you do not have automatic update enabled it is wise to do so or at least check for updates once a week.

Some firewalls. av and defender programs will prevent installation so when downloading and installing it is best to not browse away from microsoft and disable the av, firewall and defender (antispam) untill installation is complete then restatr and recheck for updates again untill all updates are installed.

do not forget then to reenable the av antispam and firewall.

There are ways to make update an exception on your defence programs so that they do not interfere and as each is different some help may be needed so ask here and I am sure someone will be able to help. alternatively go to the microsoft communities where most problems are solved often by ms approved advisors and if you cannot see your problem a simpe post will provide the right help in a day or so.
the links are shown on previous posts just find the section for your problem and operating system.
there are sections for internet explorer office and all the rest.

Most of this can be found here or one of the links from this page http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-NZ/default.mspx
cheers

I have vista on my new laptop, the two desktops are xp home and the toshiba laptop is xp pro.   I have the updates set to automatic on all machines and had a few yesterday for Vista but no SP2.  It already has SP1.  Thanks for the info.   I am on broadband but it will still take a while no doubt.   I like Vista.
