Title: What's eating my plants?
Post by: Nitpicker1 on March 07, 2009, 04:31:02 pm
I can find no sign of pests near the damaged newly planted seedling lettuce, wondering if earwigs have been gnawing on this?
it must be sumpin big, going by the size of the wee bites round the edge of the wound.
It happened overnight, so whatever it was musta been very hungry.

I haven't had this sort of damage occurring before.

I know I am having trouble with slugs at the moment.
Going down to close the gates in bare feet after dark can be a somewhat ickky experience. :-X

The other thing I had a very surprising problem with was moth caterpillers - in my fish tank no less.
I don't know what kind of moth but one got into the fish tank. I left it figuring is would either figure out how to get back out through the crack in the lid or drown and become fish food. I didn't count on it laying eggs on the plants poking above the surface  :o. Some karki green striped caterpillers resulted. I had Mr sp (these grossed me out for some reason and most bugs don't) cut the offening shoots off into a cup and drowned them in boiling water.

White butterfly is still around up here as well.

In any case a bit of slug bait and a shake of derris dust should sort it out.
