Like most Pakeha I am of very mixed heritage. None of it is Maori and than is more luck than management.
I married an immigrant myself so more has been added to the mix.
I do have relatives by marrage who are Maori or part maori. The distinction seems to be more Pakeha in origin than Maori.
Their children, my cousins, don't seem to have any more problem with their various cultural backgrounds than I do.

I knew a woman some years ago from the north. She was a staunch Ngapuhi, through the course we were doing, it was the first time she looked into her heritage. She had had no interest beforehand and has no 'fair' features at all. She discovered one of her ancestors was an early missionary and was quite put out about it. She didnt over compensate for it - it just took her a while to come to terms with it. Maori who were of mixed race were called half castes at school through the 60s by every level of society - I have no doubt many of them would still carry some anger over that. |

My wife does, she is involed in not only the pipe band, but also in Scottish country dancing and knows about her Welsh and Scots ancestory and she also knows about her Maaori Ancestory! |

My Mother told me recently how her uncle Tui wasn't allowed in the house when they visited when she was a child.
She never understood why so that is probably why I have never fully understood that there maybe a problem with inter marrige.
I didn't grow up in a small Waikato town, I grew up in a city where most of the Maori I went to school with were no more born and bred local than I was.

I think there used to be a problem for some, its generally accepted now. Though in saying that when we go to MrLs marae - we are the only white ones attached to the whanau - there will be others at a tangi or whatever - but no other white ones DNA wise - I didnt study biology at school - the brown of their dna is much stronger than the white and mostly seems dominant. |

I'm proud of being "Mixed Blood" - that's what makes me a Kiwi. However I'm not at all proud of the Maori today - and I'm not really proud of the Maori 100 years ago either - so go figure.....  |
